One thing have I asked of Jehovah, that will I seek after; That I may dwell in the house of Jehovah all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of Jehovah, And to inquire in his temple.
–King David, 27th Psalm
“One thing have I desired, my God, of Thee; that will I seek: Thine house be home to me. I would not breathe an alien other air; I would be with Thee, O Thou fairest fair. For I would see the beauty of my Lord and hear Him speak, who is my heart’s adored. O Love of loves, and can such wonder dwell in Thy great name of names, Immanuel? Thou with Thy child; Thy child at home with Thee; O Love of loves, I love, I worship Thee.”
–Amy Carmichael from

One thing has consumed my soul,
One passion my earthly aim-
To fix my gaze up your face,
And learn to say your name.
One place calls my yearning frame,
One thing do I desire-
To stand with seraphim before the throne,
And blaze with holy fire.

Keenings
Perhaps it is the smell of wood lit fires, crisp autumn mornings or just the sense of holidays in the air, but my heart is turning to themes of home. For me home was always a very special place to go. I know that isn’t so with a lot of people, but I have fond memories of growing up on Cooper Mountain. Bonfires, sledding parties, snowmen, ice caves…summer camas meadow romps, horseback rides through the forest and family around the table. Perhaps this nostalgic nudging is to make me even more homesick for my eternal abode. I have felt a longing for the city whose builder and maker is God….I think the closer we position ourselves in the light of his face, the more we realize we truly are just sojourners here, eternity is in our hearts, and this is not our home.
“that they should seek God, if haply they might feel after him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us: for in him we live, and move, and have our being; ” Acts 17:27-28
If are abode is in Him, shouldn’t we know the color of the carpet? The arrangement of the furniture? Whether we take our shoes off or not, the hour of dinner? The concept of Emmanuel is so real to me at the moment….God with us. Literally translated God tabernacles, makes his abode, with man…So often I have found myself feeling afar off from God, yet we see through the beauty of the Son, his is forever with us. It is like going “home” but never entering the door. You stand outside and smell the aroma of dinner while your tummy is rumbling, and turn away not realizing this is YOUR house too. “In my Father’s house are many mansions, if it were not so I would have told you…I go to prepare a place for you that where I am there YOU MAY BE ALSO”….Because he arose and is seated witht he Father,we can live and move and breathe and have our being in Him, today and for eternity.
