Heard a very very good definition of idolatry today. “Anything I will sin to obtain, or sin to keep.” Examples were given of thought processes, material possessions, social standings, even good things. The speaker then goes on to describe anger as an emotion resulting from an idol not being fed!
Ouch! What?! As I have been pondering on that this afternoon, I must say often times this is true. In my early days of motherhood I struggled with the “idol” of perfect housekeeping, kids, business…when that got disrupted I erupted. The Lord had to sit me down and show me how wrong those ideologies…oh wait…IDOLATRIES were. I am grateful for this reminder, and conviction today, to use this as a self- gauge. When I get angry what is not being fed? If I have died with Christ, I also died to my selfish ambitions. I find that we as Christians are so marinated in a culture that demands we satisfy our flesh and all of it’s wants. We are told who to be from the way we dress, the careers we choose, the houses we buy, to the friends we keep. God says to come out from among them and be separate. Think differently. Act differently. Love differently. Be “other”. Counter cultural revolutionaries who are monotheistic. Living for and serving the one true God.
Oh the shelves of little deities I have built in my heart. Time to have an old fashioned bonfire. A real Holy Spirit blaze of house cleaning in anticipation of the Springtime of His presence desiring to abide and fill my life.
